Paige Bowen is a curator and artist, born in South Africa and growing up across four different countries before landing in Richmond Hill, Ontario. She completed her BFA in drawing and painting at OCAD in 2024, before continuing on to the Haliburton School of Art and Design, where she did a certificate in Fibre Arts. Now, as she develops her art practice, she is also diving into the world of curation, where she continues to use art and the environment to get to know herself and her community.
Artistically speaking, Paige writes:
“I am an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Toronto, currently working with textiles and ink drawing. Growing up, my family moved internationally every 2 to 5 years, at times it can be difficult to connect and comprehend ideas of home; that place is constantly shifting. Through my work, I explore themes of home and what that means as an immigrant within Toronto’s multicultural community. I capture themes of loneliness, longing, and nostalgia for homes I’ve left behind and the disconnection felt in homes I am still in. I aim to capture the land and the meditative calm I feel when surrounded by it. I want to bring the viewer into places of peace and use methodologies that establish and enrich that same feeling. Recently in my life, I’ve started truly understanding the importance of choosing change. In my youth, change was often abrupt and scary, or slow and scary. But without change, nothing would grow, and the clouds wouldn’t move. In a way, change is the only thing constant.”
